Mommies are People...

I recently dug out many, many children's song and storybook cassettes and cd's from when I was young and also when Andrew was a little guy. Today, I was looking for a Tarzan storybook cassette since Kevin is currently all about Tarzan (side note: he, of course, calls the bad guys in this story "bad pirates"...) Instead, I found some Psalty Kids Praise album cassettes. Wow, I still remember it like yesterday.

"If I were a crocodile... I'd thank you Lord for my big smile!"

I laughed when it tells you to "turn over the record." I can hardly wait for Kevin to ask, "What's a record, Mommy?"

Then, I found Free to Be, You and Me. My parents recorded this copy for me from the album, and it's sooo old, the cassette tape actually sounds scratchy! But it still plays -- It's got to be 30-something years old! I can so clearly remember this album as well... I must have listened to that album a thousand times on vacations and just hanging out in my room as a little girl.

"Take my hand come with me, where the children are free..."

"Mommies are people... People with children..."

"Ladies first! Ladies first!... and she was..."

"William wants a doll! William wants a doll!"

(Touchy feely, feminist indoctrination....) But even so, I didn't think about any of that when I was listening to it over and over. And now as I sit here, again listening, childhood memories are pouring down upon me. I wonder what Kevin's memories will be. Oh yeah. Pirates and firefighters. And yesterday, he told me he wanted to be a tractor. Me, I'm just trying to stay a "people"...
